FGN Launches Single-Digit Loan Scheme to Boost MSMEs Growth in Nigeria

The Federal Government of Nigeria has unveiled a major financing initiative aimed at strengthening the country’s Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) sector, a critical driver of economic growth and job creation.

This new programme, introduced under the SMEDAN Inspire–Create–Start–Scale (ICSS) framework, is designed to provide affordable funding opportunities to 6,122 selected businesses across Nigeria. By offering single-digit interest loans, the government seeks to reduce the financial burden often faced by entrepreneurs and enable them to scale their operations more effectively.

MSMEs play a vital role in Nigeria’s economy, contributing significantly to employment and innovation. However, access to funding has remained one of the biggest challenges for business owners. This initiative directly addresses that gap by making low-interest financing more accessible and structured.

The programme is being implemented through a strategic collaboration between the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN), Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), Kaduna Business School, and GOPA Worldwide Consultants. This partnership ensures that the scheme is not only well-funded but also professionally managed with a strong focus on sustainability and transparency.

Funding under the programme will be administered by Jaiz Bank, providing two key categories of loans tailored to different stages of business growth:

- START Loan: ₦250,000 to ₦2,000,000, designed for early-stage businesses and startups seeking to establish or stabilize operations.
- SCALE Loan: ₦1,000,000 to ₦5,000,000, targeted at existing businesses looking to expand, increase production, or enter new markets.

Beyond financial support, the initiative represents a broader commitment by the Federal Government to empower entrepreneurs, stimulate productivity, and encourage innovation across multiple sectors. By improving access to capital, the programme is expected to help businesses grow sustainably, create employment opportunities, and contribute meaningfully to national development.

In addition, the ICSS programme aligns with ongoing national efforts to strengthen youth empowerment and economic inclusion, particularly by supporting young entrepreneurs with viable business ideas.

Interested applicants are encouraged to apply through the Nigerian Youth Academy (NiYA), a dedicated platform that facilitates youth-focused development programmes. Applications can be submitted via the official portal of the Federal Ministry of Youth Development:

Applicants are advised to complete their registration as early as possible, as the number of available slots is limited and demand is expected to be high.

This initiative presents a rare opportunity for Nigerian entrepreneurs to access affordable funding and take their businesses to the next level.
