“Nigeria Is Paying the Price” — Sheikh Nura Khalid Links Today’s Crisis to 2015 Zaria Killings
Abuja, Nigeria — A prominent Islamic cleric in Nigeria, Nura Khalid, has stirred national conversation after linking the country’s current socio-economic and security challenges to the controversial killing of Shi’a followers in Zaria in 2015.
Speaking during a recent address, Sheikh Khalid stated that the consequences of the incident continue to affect Nigeria, suggesting that unresolved grievances from that period may still be shaping events in the country today.
He said, “Since the day the Shi’a followers were killed in Zaria, their rights have continued to follow Nigeria,” a statement that has since generated widespread reactions across religious, political, and civil society circles.
The 2015 incident, which occurred during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari and under the leadership of former Kaduna State governor Nasir El-Rufai, remains one of the most debated events in Nigeria’s recent history.
Reports at the time indicated that Nigerian soldiers clashed with members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, a Shi’a group led by Ibraheem Zakzaky, resulting in the deaths of hundreds, with some accounts suggesting the number exceeded one thousand, including men, women, and children.
The confrontation was reportedly triggered by allegations that members of the group blocked a major road in Zaria, allegedly obstructing the movement of the then Chief of Army Staff, Tukur Buratai.
The aftermath of the clash saw security forces storm the residence of Zakzaky, leading to the death of several of his family members, including three of his sons. Zakzaky himself, along with his wife, was injured and later taken into custody, where they remained in detention for years before being released under court orders.
Over the years, the incident has continued to attract local and international attention, with human rights organizations calling for accountability, justice, and transparency regarding the events that unfolded.
Sheikh Khalid’s recent remarks have reignited debate about the long-term impact of the Zaria killings, particularly in relation to national unity, justice, and reconciliation. Analysts note that discussions around historical grievances often resurface during periods of national difficulty, reflecting deeper concerns about governance and social cohesion.
As Nigeria continues to navigate complex economic pressures and security challenges, voices from religious and community leaders are increasingly shaping public discourse on accountability and the need for healing.
